Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, [email protected])

Two former Penn State football coaches are suing the university saying they were unfairly tied to the Jerry Sandusky case. The case sounds like a stretch to us, but we hope the case goes to trial because we think it's important that more of the truth about the Penn State scandal surfaces publicly.

As egregious and blatant a predator as Sandusky was, it's hard to imagine that many who worked with or near him didn't at least have suspicions about his crimes. We also suspect that many at least heard rumors about Sandusky's crimes and chose to ignore them, rather than question them.

Penn State officials did act quickly when the scandal finally burst into public view. That they acted quickly does not necessarily mean that they acted improperly.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
