PA - 19 more Sandusky suits settle

For immediate release: Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Statement by Barbara Dorris, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 862 7688 home, 314 503 0003 cell, [email protected])

These settlements close no chapter in this sad saga. More remains hidden about which and how Penn State officials ignored and concealed Sandusky's crimes.

While these checks may help some victims heal, they shed no light on the crucial questions about cover ups. That will only happen through criminal and civil trials, which we hope will happen soon.

We hope this settlement comforts at least some of the many families who have suffered and are suffering because officials at Penn State failed to take prompt action when reports of suspected abused by Jerry Sandusky were first reported.

At the same time, we hope that more of Sandusky’s victims will have their “day in court.” We believe a trial would reveal even more stunning deceit and recklessness by top university officials.

It’s important to remember that no amount of money can restore a child’s innocence or stop a parent’s nightmares. But we hope that settlement’s like this one will discourage not only predators but anyone who has shielded or enabled them.

We hope every person who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes by coaches comes forward. Staying silent helps no one. Speaking up helps expose and deter wrongdoing. It also protects kids and brings healing.
