Pope Francis has disciplined a German bishop for financial misdeeds. We hope he will consider disciplining Bellville Bishop Edward Braxton, too.

Braxton has spent thousands of dollars - selfishly and inappropriately - on his vestments, furnishings and home renovations.

And he's acted recklessly, callously, and secretively in clergy sex abuse and cover up cases.

To us, the safety of kids and the healing of victims are crucial. To the pope, apparently, avoiding extravagance is crucial.

Regardless, if the church is to become healthier and safer, we believe the pope should continue to discipline prelates who act like irresponsible monarchs in a variety of ways.
