MN- Archbishop continues to deceive, SNAP says

For immediate release: Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 503 0003 cell, [email protected])

We're saddened that Archbishop John Nienstedt won't resign but distraught that he continues to deceive.

He continues to pretend that his deliberately deceptive behavior - over years - is just well-intentioned laxness, when ample evidence shows that's just not true. He has repeatedly and knowingly protected predators and endangered kids. He claims he's not been "hands on" enough. That's just not true. He's been plenty "hands on," but directed in precisely the wrong direction - toward secrecy, not safety.

We are not surprised he's staying in office and lying to parishioners. We long for the day that even one bishop really 'comes clean' and admits pervasive misconduct in covering up clergy sex crimes.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
