Today the Harrisburg Diocese released the names of 71 accused clerics of child sex abuse. And  they will remove the names of all Harrisburg bishops from buildings since 1937 due to coverup of bishops.

We are extremely grateful that the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania will make a redacted version of the grand jury report public next month. Hopefully, the judges will ultimately decide to allow the entire report to see the light of day.

In an unusual attempt to get the PA Grand Jury report released to the public, we applaud Attorney General Josh Shapiro for writing to the Pope asking for his help. We wish him good luck, but we would be very surprised if the Pope will do anything to help.

NJ: School and monastery need to do more to face their abuse problems “directly and forthrightly”

Abbot Richard Cronin, the head of St. Mary's Benedictine Abbey, and Father Michael Tidd, headmaster of Delbarton School in Morris Township, wrote to alumni and other members of the community on July 20th. The joint letter said that the two believed it was important to address “directly and forthrightly” the fact that thirteen monks who worked at the school have been accused of sexually abusing thirty children over the past three decades.

On Tuesday Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, warned that the Catholic Church could lose its “already weakened moral authority” if it doesn’t make changes.  The Boston cardinal made those remarks in the wake of allegations of sexual abuse of both children and adults by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

Archbishop convicted of covering up sex abuse of children avoids jail, victims respond

Australian Archbishop Philip Wilson, who was convicted in May of concealing child sexual abuse, has been spared prison time. The archbishop of Adelaide was sentenced yesterday to six months of house arrest followed by six months of probation due to his ailing health and age.
