Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, [email protected])

Two female Louisiana teachers have been arrested after a student revealed that they had sexually abused him. Though the boy allegedly bragged about it, it's a crime for any adult to have any sexual contact with any youngster and it the severity of child sex crimes should never be minimized.

The student allegedly called the abuse “consensual.” However, sex between and adult and a minor can never truly be consensual because of the power and age difference.

Officials at Destrehan High should immediately notify parents about the alleged abuse and urge anyone else who may have been hurt to contact law enforcement immediately. They should actively help police and prosecutors by writing to school alums begging former students who may have been hurt by Shelley Dufresne or Rachel Respess to come forward. They should aggressively use district and school websites and publications and mailings to send the same message to current and former parents and staff. And they should educate their community about the seriousness of child sex crimes, no matter how those involved or victimized might mischaracterize them.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
