Important Deadline Reminder for California SNAP

This is an important deadline reminder for those in California.

Those survivors who are interested in participating in the Independent Compensation Program (ICP) for victims of childhood sexual abuse by a diocesan priest in the six participating California dioceses (Fresno, Orange, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego and Los Angeles) MUST register online by JANUARY 31, 2020.
Registration is mandatory for program participation, and the deadline cannot be missed.

While a three-year civil window opened on January 1, 2020, allowing ALL survivors of child sexual abuse in California to file a lawsuit, the ICP provides an alternative to litigation for SOME Catholic victims in the state.

The downside for participants is that they will likely receive a smaller settlement than they would if they filed a lawsuit, and that information about the abuser held by the dioceses will not be shared with them or with the public. Survivors are free to share their story and their settlement with others.

Key features of the program:
• It is open to anyone who has been abused by a diocesan priest from any of the participating dioceses, no matter when that abuse occurred.
• Settlement offers are determined by the ICP Administrators, and are not reviewable by the Church.
• Survivors decide how much, if any, of their experience is shared with the public.
• There is no cost to participate, and those without lawyers are provided an opportunity to consult with an attorney, at no cost, prior to accepting any settlement offer.
