IL--Victims applaud Speaker Ryan for removing Hastert portrait

Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those abused by Priests (314 566 9790davidgclohessy@gmail.com)

We are grateful that House Speaker Paul Ryan has removed the portrait of Dennis Hastert. Its presence in a taxpayer-funded building was hurtful to victims of sexual violence. Its removal will give hope to victims that if they speak up, sometimes, some measure of justice is possible.

Each one of us has a moral and a civic duty to protect children, especially from cunning predators. Part of that duty involves calling law enforcement the minute we learn about or suspect possible child sex crimes. We firmly believe, based on more than 25 years of work, that others knew of or suspected Hastert’s crimes and kept quiet. That silence must end if kids are to be protected.

We beg every single member of Congress and every single person in Hastert’s past who may have suspected Hastert’s crimes to call police, no matter how old, small or seemingly insignificant their suspicions might seem. All of us must report any hints of child sex crimes or cover ups to the authorities and let the independent, experienced professionals in law enforcement determine whether charges can be brought.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
