CA--Victims blast Fresno judge abuse sentence
For immediate release: Thursday, Aug. 20
Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 503 0003, bdorris@SNAPnetwork.org)
We’re grateful that two predator Fresno teachers will never teach again. But we’re disappointed neither predator will do any jail time.
Admitted abusers Matt Pena and 30-year-old Dwayne Andrews were sentenced yesterday. But the ex-Clovis High School staffers won’t be locked up unless others who may have seen, suspected or suffered other crimes by them come forward. While we hope no one else was assaulted by these teachers, if this has happened, we hope victims, witnesses and whistleblowers call law enforcement right away.
Let’s face it: the sad, simple truth is that kids are safest when predators are imprisoned. And sex offenders rarely strike just once. So again, if they’ve hurt others, we beg those individuals to speak up now.
And we strongly urge school board members, administrators and teachers to aggressively seek out and help anyone who might have information or suspicions about these predators. Too often, supervisors and colleagues of predators know more than they share with law enforcement, so predators end up with short or light sentences.
(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. 2 EDUCATORS SENTENCED AFTER SEX WITH STUDENT
Sex with student: No jail, no sex offender registration for Clovis High educators
KFSN By Corin Hoggard - Thursday, August 20, 2015 11:32AM
FRESNO, Calif. -- Two Clovis High School educators won't have to do any extra jail time or register as sex offenders even though they admitted having sex with a student. 33-year-old Matt Pena and 30-year-old Dwayne Andrews both learned their punishments Wednesday.
Andrews and Pena hadn't publicly said a word about their actions until their sentencing hearings when they both acknowledged serious errors in judgment. Both men will serve three years on probation, but otherwise avoid harsher punishment.
One after the other, the former Clovis High assistant football coach and the former assistant baseball coach faced . . .
