CA--Victims blast bishop over delay in abuse case

For immediate release: Monday, July 13

Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, davidgcl[email protected])

Fifteen years after having been accused of child sexual abuse, a Stockton Catholic priest is being suspended.

The diocese disclosed last Friday that Father Editho Mascardo is on administrative leave.

Shame on Catholic officials for this reckless delay. Shame on them for releasing this information on a Friday, when they know it will attract the least attention. Shame on them for their misleading language, calling alleged child sex abuse “inappropriate conduct.” Shame on them for refusing to disclose which law enforcement agency they supposedly notified.

We hope every single Stockton area Catholic will demand an in-person explanation from Bishop Stephen Blaire about this horrific delay.

And we hope every single person who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes and cover ups in the Stockton diocese, whether by Fr. Mascardo or others, will come forward, get help, call police, expose wrongdoers and protect kids and get help.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
