Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314-503-0003, [email protected])

We applaud Judy Thompson for her courageous letter to comedian Bill Cosby’s wife Camille and each of the women who are seeking justice and healing by suing Cosby, filing police reports against him or speaking out about his crimes.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in SNAP over the past quarter century, it’s that persistence and creativity can sometimes prevail over even the most powerful or popular predator.

In fact, in many cases of sexual violence and cover up, only persistence and creativity work.

We hope Judy Thompson’s letter will cut through Camille Cosby’s denial and provide a ray of hope for those who are still suffering because this manipulative man preyed on them. Even if her letter makes no real difference, we admire her for standing up for her daughter.

And let’s never forget that Cosby allegedly didn’t only assault adults. He faces one child sex abuse lawsuit. Our hearts ache for that victim too.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We were founded in 1988 and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
